  2. films. Film censorship dates back almost as
  3. far as the cinema. In Britain, censorship was
  4. established in 1912, in the USA 1922. In some
  5. countries, self-regulation of the industry
  6. has not been regarded as sufficient; in the
  7. Soviet Union, for example, state censorship
  8. has forbidden the treatment of certain
  9. issues. Censorship in Britain was the
  10. responsibility of the British Board of Film
  11. Censors (now the British Board of Film
  12. Classification) which gives each film a
  13. rating. In Britain, children were not
  14. prevented from seeing certain films until
  15. 1933, when the `H' (for `horrific')
  16. certificate was introduced. In the USA,
  17. censorship was not established until 1922
  18. with the founding of the Motion Picture
  19. Producers and Distributors of America (see
  20. Hays Office).
